Love is Love: Jean Paul Gaultier

Love is Love: Wedding Bliss for All A La Jean Paul Gaultier

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal, Quebec currently holds the final collection closing a six year long worldwide tour.  Representing Jean Paul Gaultier’s exquisite designs, this final show is 36 of his best haute couture wedding dresses spanning from 1990 - 2017.

Entitled, Love is Love, Gaultier named it after Obama’s famous speech when gay marriage was legalized.  There are dresses representing various cultures, communities, and of course same sex marriage.  His and His kilts and Hers and Hers pant suits.  Hats galore and literally tons of fabric draped through the space.  A three tiered cake is the centre piece with mannequins donning his creations.

The intricacy of his designs are truly breath taking.  The hand beading, embroidery, stitching.  A critic wrote in an article about this exhibition, “How we see Monet and Matisse, to see Gaultier’s work this close for all the detail is truly rare.”  He is absolutely right.  My mother and I walked around the exhibition probably four times, spotting something new each round.  Including the wedding dress I will promptly be fashioning mine after.  My lucky future husband is in for an applause when my faux Jean Paul creation comes strutting down the runway - I mean… Aisle.

Exhibition from June 17th to October 9th 2017.  Tickets can be bought here.
