Des Fleurs Pour Moi?

Des Fleurs Pour Moi?

Perhaps this sounds a tad cliché.. But I am a woman who absolutely adores flowers.  There is always a bouquet in my room beside my bed, in the bathroom or outside on my patio.    If a man buys me flowers I literally swoon over him for a decade and if I’m feeling jilted by a man I go out and buy flowers to love myself again.

I had to question as to why I love flowers so much.  Why is it that when I wake up in the morning and see a beautiful bunch of lilies I smile to myself and hear the birds singing?  Or smell hyacinths in the afternoon and immediately smile to myself as I’m working from home?

Turns out that there is an actual chemical reaction in your brain to the sight and smell of flowers.  As human beings we have both a primitive reaction to sight and chemical to fragrance.  We see flowers, and this goes back to caveman era, where we become happy to see our surroundings in bloom and color.  Signifying life, rebirth and sunlight.  The fragrance in flowers is a chemical that actually breaks down endorphins in our bodies which triggers feelings of euphoria.

I wonder what we would be like as a society if we bought flowers for each other or ourselves more.  To the men out there.. Buy your lady flowers and see that reaction.  Back massage and breakfast in bed - no doubt.  Single ladies: TREAT YOURSELF.

When I lived in London, my flat was around the corner from Colombia Road Market which is one of the most glorious flower markets in the world.  I had just gone through a break up over my birthday, (great timing buddy.) so I took myself to the street market to buy flowers.  I was purchasing a big bunch of pink peonies from an older English gent when he asked me, “Why is a beautiful girl like you buying her own flowers?!”  “Can’t a girl buy her own flowers?”  He smiled and gave me a free bunch of hydrangea's.  Love.
